In the spring of 1862, Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan launched the Peninsula Campaign. Sailing down the Chesapeake Bay, McClellan landed at Fort Monroe and began a drive on Richmond. Confederates under Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder opposed McClellan at Yorktown. After a relatively bloodless siege, Magruder withdrew to Williamsburg in early May.
