On April 2, 1865, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered an assault against Robert E. Lee's lines at Petersburg. After the victory at Five Forks the day before, Grant believed he could finally crack the Confederate lines and end the ten month siege. This successful “Breakthrough” of the Confederate lines forced Lee to abandon Petersburg and the Confederate capital at Richmond. Lee surrendered to Grant one week later at Appomattox Court House.
