On July 1, 1862, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Maj. Gen. George McClellan engaged in the last battle of the Seven Days' battles. Malvern Hill was the last position before the Union army withdrew to Harrison’s Landing on the James River. Lee hoped to intercept and destroy McClellan. Tactically the Federals won the battle. However, the South’s morale skyrocketed with Lee’s successful defense of the Confederate capital of Richmond. Lee firmly held the initiative in Virginia following the campaign.
