Situated at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, Harper's Ferry played a critical role in our Nation's first century. The U.S. Armory there outfitted the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The installation became the target abolitionist John Brown and his subsequent 1859 raid led to civil war. Occupied by both sides during the conflict, it once again became a focal point for the Confederates in the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
