Dunstaffnage Castle is located just a few miles north of Oban on a promontory that looks out across Ardmucknish Bay and the Western Isles. It was here that the King of the Isles, Duncan MacDougall, built his formidable stronghold in the early 1200s as a defence against invading Norwegian armies who were looking to take control of the Hebrides, and the imposing fortifications of Dunstaffnage Castle remain an impressive sight to behold to this day.
