After the fighting around Totopotomoy, Federal cavalry seized the key crossroads of Old Cold Harbor. On June 1, Grant began attacking Lee as he fortified around another intersection at “new” Cold Harbor. Two days later, Federals launched a massive but unsuccessful assault on the Rebel lines. The Union army set off one last time – toward Petersburg, and the 10-month siege that would end the war.
