On August 16, 1780 an American army under Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates clashed with a British force led by Charles, Lord Cornwallis north of Camden, South Carolina. The battle was a crushing defeat for Gates. Combined with the fall of Charleston three months earlier, the battle was a major blow to the American war effort and left South Carolina firmly in the hands of the British.
