Cox's Field
Cox's Field was the location of the fighting on March 8th which was highlighted by a 2 hour Union artillery barrage led by Union Gen. Franz Sigel with 21 guns along this knoll, and an additional 6 guns joining in later. These guns fired approximately 3,600 rounds. The Confederates, whose supply train was left behind, quickly ran out of ammunition and CS Gen. Earl Van Dorn was forced to order a retreat as the entire Federal line, 10,000 strong, charged the Confederate line in unison.
Oberson's Field
This is where Union Colonel Peter Osterhaus and his division of Federal troops held off units from Confederate Brigadier General Ben McCulloch's Division. After routing the Federals at Foster's Farm, the Confederates were in pursuit and emerging from the line of woods that you can see at the north end of the field.
