Camp Creek Valley
Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman initiated a campaign to capture Atlanta in the spring of 1864. In an attempt to flank Gen. Joseph Johnston out of his position near Dalton, Sherman sent the Army of the Tennessee under Maj. Gen. James McPherson on a flanking movement toward Resaca and Johnston's rear. McPherson failed to press his advantage and the two sides engaged in a bitter two day battle. Johnston eventually abandoned his position and withdrew to Cassville.
